On the 31st of May, our whole class assembled at the International School of The Hague on account of GIN-day (Global Initiatives Day). We were told that it was an annual one-day event, aimed at connecting and inspiring students from around the Netherlands. This year’s theme was “Creating Unity and Pursuing Opportunity”. At first, those seemed difficult, plain words, but as the day passed, my understanding of GIN-day’s importance became crystal clear.
Within the first few moments of our arrival, I felt very welcomed by both students and staff, and I entered a very positive atmosphere. We were led to the “opening ceremony”, where two guest speakers spoke about their jobs and how they had an effect on human rights. First there was a woman who spoke to us about her work at Partners in Justice International and delivered an inspiring speech about life as a human rights lawyer. Next, there was a man who spoke about UNICEF and their mission, he used humour which made his speech entertaining to listen to.
